Hi,Yes, we've left it up to encourage other folks to participate in the Big Read. I loved the sermon chapter, too. Enjoy your read. Be sure you check in with the all the links provided and the blog that went on at that time. The links are in these threads.
Major congratulations to both of you for finishing. I'm dragging up toward the grand finale. Love the certificate idea. :)
Too bad there's not another Big Read going on. :)
I'm looking forward to hearing this chapter given all the high praise. Kudos to you both for making it to chapter 134!
Hi Hayes, Great. I read all day Saturday, so I'll have to spend the next few days making my comments. :) I did go and open up the next several chapters. Thanks for keeping up with that. The last few months I guess I've been in lock down. :)

Okay, I am officially caught up reading-wise. Haven't heard all the audio or read the blog but I've read through chapter 113.
Hayes wrote: "Happy New Year everyone!Happy New Year to you, Hayes, and to all and a whole lot of happy reading to us all.
I'll be pouring over the pages playing catch-up so I can finish on time. I miss that big white whale.

Interesting. At some point I think I've understood the term from Melville's perspective. Perhaps from my grandparents.
Looks like there's a lot of additional commentary to be had with this chapter given the comments on the blog. I went to the Patell blog and loved this quote: “For I believe that much of a man’s character will be found betokened in his backbone. I would rather feel your spine than your skull, whoever you are. A thin joist of a spine never yet upheld a full and noble soul. I rejoice in my spine, as in the firm audacious staff of that flag which I fling half out to the world.”
Clicked on over to Angela's blog and enjoyed seeing the images of the harpoons, the doubloon, and the old dart board as well as the others. Haven't quite taken in the text yet. :)
Hi there, I made a couple of comments in the chit chat section. I'm back and once I find my book will be playing major catch up. Got thrown off again due to some major body aches. I've missed the great whale.
Well, I've got some serious catching up to do. I had every intention of throwing myself back into things but I guess my body and mind had other things in mind--even my wrists and hands have been hurting more than usual. But after 4-5 days of Alleve, I seem to be doing better. Now, if I can just find my book under all this paper cluttering up my desk....
I caught a show the other day where Father Barron, a priest who makes a lot of movie and book references and is found on the Internet, spoke about the story of Jonah and that he found Melville's commentary in this chapter to be one of the best he's read of Jonah. I remember thinking the same thing when I read the chapter.
Tracey: Thank you for keeping up with the chapter threads while I was out of the mix. Came back from the silent retreat exhausted and then discovered a problem with my computer. That's fixed now. Guess I'll have the holiday to play catch up but I wanted to thank you and everyone for keeping things going.
