We are told to face our fears, but that doesn't help. You can jump from that cliff and face heights but still climb back up, look down and feel that same fear. We've always made things to ease our fears. Hiding under blankets protects us from scares, parents looking under the bed for monsters, imaginary friends keeping us company, all examples of things reassuring us of our fears.
