[close] 1) While not ironclad, we encourage anything longlisted for any major literary prize such as: The Booker, Pulitzer, Nobel, Giller, Canada Reads, National Book Award, Commonwealth Writers' Prize, the Russian Booker Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Awards etc.

While this does not guarantee a good read, it increases the odds considerably.

2) In general try to avoid specific genre prizes like "best mystery" or "best historical fiction" as too often these are better _______ than they are stories, and if _______ is not your thing it can be tedious.

The long list for all of the major prizes over decades include thousands of titles and there is a good sprinkling of every genre if you just look a bit.

3) We also encourage books by and about marginal communities, but exceptions can be suggested and the group will usually be open to it.
