Hard-boiled, fast-talking, ultra-macho, tongue-in-cheek, not too bright, self-absorbed noir detective. This character has breathed new life into the whole noir concept and raised it to new heights. He can tell one-liners standing on his head, rolls his own cigarettes, and is the only detective in California who still wears a fedora. Maybe that means something, maybe not.
