Diana Vaimauga Graceling

best book fell in love with it the first time

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads And it was published in 2008.

message 3: by Jack (new)

Jack the panty thief of bridgeport

message 5: by James (new)

James Dante Yesterday I added my novel, THE TIGER'S WEDDING, to the giveaway list.

message 6: by Jack (new)

Jack The Panty Thief of Bridgeport is a page turner, it gets you hooked after the third chapter. But there is a rather large weak middle part, around page 100 that I found a bit slow. Other than that it is really a great book. As of right now I'm voting for it as Best Book of 2013 because when its good, its really good. Take away that one slow section and it would be incredibly good!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Do you have other hobbies?

message 8: by Gabby (new)

Gabby I think that some books from this list are overrated.
Also, I was surprised about how many dystopian, erotica, romance, mystery, suspense books were here!

message 9: by Samiya (new)

Samiya Rehman there seemed to be a lot of sex books on this list right that is kinda weird. I guess 2013 was a good year for erotica. Who woulda thought?

message 10: by Gabby (new)

Gabby Yup!!!!! Awesome! And erotica is about sex AND plot.. ;)

message 11: by Russell (new)

Russell Over 70 of the top 100 are from series. Have authors lost the skill to write with economy - or are they merely cashing in on the chance to sell more books by serialising their storylines? I think this phenomenon fits rather snugly (or smugly?) with the trend towards getting absolutely everything we want (in the First World). Just finished a book, and wish you could get more of that author / character / storyline? Of course you can - there's a sequel!

message 12: by Amber (new)

Amber This list really makes me sad. What happened to literary pieces of work? Don't people read those anymore?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads They give them "major literary prizes," and no one reads most of them.

message 14: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Haines Samiya wrote: "there seemed to be a lot of sex books on this list right that is kinda weird. I guess 2013 was a good year for erotica. Who woulda thought?"

Go Fifty Shades and similar books!!

message 15: by Wanda (last edited Aug 06, 2013 05:36PM) (new)

Wanda I think this list is ridiculous! They're all Romance novels.

message 16: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Haines It's because all the people voting read romance books probably, that's all I read..

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Romance novels sell very well, which is one reason why.

message 18: by Gabby (new)

Gabby Wanda wrote: "I think this list is ridiculous! They're all Romance novels."

It's just the genre of 2013

message 19: by April (new)

April This is not a "best" list, this a "most-copies-sold".

Very disappointing for anyone looking for something new and excellent to read (I'm sure some of them are good, but certainly not all).

And, yes, in fact, many people (myself among them) read all the prize-winning books. I was just looking for more beyond that.

Maybe this list needs to be renamed.

message 20: by Mark (new)

Mark I really don't understand this list. I only see one book that I will read.

message 21: by Gabby (new)

And, y..."

Maybe they sold a lot of copies because they were good. That's usually how things work.

message 22: by April (new)

April Wow. This list makes me sad.

message 23: by Phillip (last edited Aug 20, 2013 04:06PM) (new)

Phillip Edwards Anyone looking for a slightly more literary list of good new fiction might prefer this: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/30520.Man_Booker_Prize_Eligible_2013

message 24: by April (new)

April Thanks!

message 25: by Walter (new)

Walter White Can anyone tell me why 90% of the books on the list are written by women ?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads You counted the author's sex through 18 pages? Wow.

message 27: by Walter (new)

Walter White Susanna wrote: "You counted the author's sex through 18 pages? Wow."
Sorry maybe I should clarify, I mean in the top 100. But I think if I checked it would be just as high through the 18 pages. I just wonder why ?

message 28: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Walter: Because women are awesome writers.

This list seems highly skewed towards romance novels and series books right now--maybe because those are the ones people have been waiting for, the ones they read as soon as they're published? Right now the top book that's not part of a series is number 73. I wonder how it will shake out as the year goes on.

Seriously, people, lists are public. If you don't like the books on this list, vote for different ones.

message 29: by Shirley (new)

Shirley First Night of Summer A must read psychological thriller/ mystery. Disturbing and relevant. Not for the faint of heart. I found it to be a touching story where good triumphs over evil. Great ending!

message 30: by Casey (new)

Casey love this list helps me see whats good and new to read. :)

message 31: by Liz (new)

Liz This is all romance. Doubtfully the "best books published in 2013"

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads There are other genres; just further down.

Romance makes up a large segment of the publication market.

message 33: by Wminbc (new)

Wminbc I only voted on books I have read...

message 34: by Voracious (new)

Voracious Not a great year for those of us who see a hashtag and a number as a count against reading a particular book, hmmm?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads There are non-series books on here, but not on page 1, I think... I've actually had a pretty good reading year, though!

message 36: by Sophie (new)

Sophie the top non-series book is now at 84.

message 37: by Lala (new)

Lala I Love It :) I have read and want to read a lot of books on this list...<3

message 38: by Kerri (new)

Kerri April wrote: "Wow. This list makes me sad."

I agree...I'm disappointed. I was looking for quality literature. Not 50 Shades knock-offs. What happened this year?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads YA series sell, that's what happened.

message 40: by Shell (new)

Shell Jackson The amount of erotica in this list is quite sad, I'm looking for ideas for things to read but most of the 1st page is erotica... :(

message 41: by Lois (new)

Lois Scott I'd like to add THE AWAKENING by Lois Scott. This, too, is a love story. One that continues on after death.

message 42: by Aishah (last edited Nov 29, 2013 05:13PM) (new)

Aishah Wanda wrote: "I think this list is ridiculous! They're all Romance novels."

Romance? Not quite. Erotica. Non-teen fiction.
I really wonder why books have to be in those genres to be termed "Best Books". You can have wonderful books without any touch of romance, much less entirely consumed by none other than erotica.
Aggravating, huh?

message 43: by Zebulon (new)

Zebulon Hollen Seems a little skewed towards one genre. Not really a good representation of all books published in 2013. Oh well I guess the times dictate the favorites.

message 44: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller Amber wrote: "This list really makes me sad. What happened to literary pieces of work? Don't people read those anymore?"

no, not really. and these are mostly series.. ugh! i only read one of the books on this list. someone needs to post of list of "Best of 2013, not in a series!" :/

message 45: by Thea (new)

Thea Sanson This list is unbelievable. These are NOT what I expected to be the BEST BOOKS of 2013.

I thought it was the best books of 2013 but it turned out to be the.. the... I GOT NOTHING. But this list ignored the REAL best books of 2013.

Faith in this generation, dwindled.

message 46: by Thea (new)

Thea Sanson Zebulon wrote: "Seems a little skewed towards one genre. Not really a good representation of all books published in 2013. Oh well I guess the times dictate the favorites."

I know what you mean. I am so sad right now.

message 47: by Robin (new)

Robin Hawdon Yes - mostly women authors, mostly sex/romance, mostly pop stuff. Which lists are for GOOD books?

message 48: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Ah, more misogyny.

message 49: by Robin (new)

Robin Hawdon No, it's not misogyny, it's just an observation. There has to be a pattern there somewhere. (I'm glad so many more women buy books than men - we need the market!)

message 50: by Sophie (new)

Sophie You implied that "women authors" are distinct from "GOOD books," ergo, misogyny.
