message 1: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Apr 21, 2011 10:30AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The Great War and Modern Memory is non-fiction. So are The Strange Death of Liberal England (which, additionally, was first published in 1935), Ghost Wars, A Brief History of Time, The Great Bridge, The Gnostic Gospels, Working, The Gathering Storm, Six Easy Pieces, Nicholas and Alexandra, Death from the Skies, Summer of '49, Homicide, and Parting the Waters.

message 2: by Herb (new)

Herb Besides the books listed in Susanna's comment from 2011, there are several other non-fiction books on this list, perhaps added since she wrote: Andre Agassi's Open; Alex Haley's Roots; and The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

There are also several works that were written before the end of WWII: Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime & Punishment; Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God; Tennessee Wiliam's Glass Menagerie.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Lance, you're the starter of this list - do you want the non-fiction and the pre-1945 fiction removed?

╟ ♫ Tima ♪ ╣ ♥ I didn't see anywhere in the description that specifies the books must be fiction, am I missing something entirely?

message 5: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Jul 24, 2012 08:46PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Lance seems to have changed the original title and description from "best post-world war 2 fiction" to "best post-war books." (According to the change log.)

At any rate, I shouldn't think Doestoyevsky would qualify.

╟ ♫ Tima ♪ ╣ ♥ I don't think that, even under the most extreme and stretched conditions, Fyodor would be able to squeak by on the list.

Unless, perhaps, someone has entirely no knowledge of when WWII was... ha ha

message 7: by Lance (last edited Jul 24, 2012 09:15PM) (new)

Lance Polin You know, for the first time since I posted this list, I looked it over. I realize that some books have been added by people other than me. Such as: The Prince of Tides, Moo, Red Mars,Green Mars (although I really like those two), Sweet Thursday, Cannary Row, Sophie's Choice (again, excellent), Maise Dobbs, Lancelot, The Glass-Blowers, Lamb, The Devil's Company, the aforementioned Open, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (eh--), The Zoo Story and other Plays, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Uncommon Reader (who voted for that?), Their Eyes Were Watching God (fair suggestion, just not my taste), Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, Life of Pi, Love in a Cold Climate and Others, Crime and Punishment (you are right--published in 1866), What is the What, Possession, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, The Sirens of Titan (although excellent), Shoeless Joe, To Kill a Mockingbird (fine, although it surely does not deserve to be on the list twice!), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (great play), A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (I would pick The Gulag Archepelgio over this) and Lucky Jim. Those without a comment I simply haven't read.

In addition, several books I actually deem worthy were considered by others and those include The Lorax, Freedom, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Wolf Hall, The Quiet American, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and The Lord of the Rings. Of course, many more options, both valid and indignantly false are available thus summarizing human diversity of tastes.

The original mistake, the title, that I will take as my own. Hopefully my simple modification obliterates that confusion--

message 8: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Jul 25, 2012 11:17AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads What, if anything, do you want me to remove, Lance?

Or were you intending this as a "private" list?

message 9: by Lance (new)

Lance Polin Nothing need be removed (even off-date selections). As stated: 'public order by decree.'

Yes. There is no distinction. I said 'books.' Some of those non-fiction books belong here. The pre-WWII ones (Crime and Punishment?) should go.

A GR librarian can do it.

Why are you 'censored by goodreads?' or is that just part of your label?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I'd send you a PM if you were accepting them. I'll just say that it dates to GR's Censorship Follies of 2013, and leave it at that.
