Books that are fictional, but comprise a story that teaches the readers some things about another culture, either present-day or historical.
However, a story set in a particular country doesn't automatically count; only books that give the reader a sense of having learned something about another land, even if that wasn't the author's primary intention. (i.e. the Stieg Larsson books would not be included, though they're set in Sweden)

This is turning out to be a great list. I only wish there was a way to see why people added each book, like the specific reason that it's appropriate for the list...
Alright, I've removed both Augustus and The Shawnees and the War for America.
Devil in the White City shouldn't be on list. it is non-fiction

I have removed Good Morning, Mr. Mandela, which is a memoir. I was the flake who added it in the first place and was the only one who had voted for it, so its removal should not cause a ripple. Mea culpa.I strongly question the addition of what appears to be about six books in the same YA series at the end of the list. I know, the ends of lists sometimes get a little bit questionable, but I thought I would mention it since this list is young. I have not read anything by Ally Carter and for all I know, perhaps each and every one of those books is set beautifully in a different, well-defined international location...but I sort of doubt it. Just sayin'.
