Not just a woman as the main character -- a woman with strength, intelligence and self-respect. If she can outwit the men who get in her way, all the better.

I don't think Pride and Prejudice belongs on this list. Sure, it's about a strong-willed woman. But the main plot line of the book is about how a strong-minded woman makes several WRONG assumptions and is taught a lesson about prejudice by, umm...a man. I like Lizzie, don't get me wrong. And cudos for refusing to marry Mr. Collins and all that. But girl power? I'd say that's a strech. For girl power, give me Buffy the Vampire Slayer any day.

That's why you need to vote Beth. It weights the votes people give. I agree that it definitely shouldn't be first on the list, but only other votes move it down. Also, I don't think people realize that you can add books of your own to the list and expand it. That's what I really wanted to do--get ideas of more available girl power books.

definitely not! Bella is your weird looking, loner girl. After becoming a vamp she does have strength but that's not all that makes a woman have girl power.
Oh, good, I thought you meant otherwise. I'm completely by your side.Deleted for miscategorizing: Twilight
Girl Power!! What a great list :) I recently read an amazing booked that 100% deserves to be on this list called "The Pedestriennes" by author Harry Hall (http://www.pedestriennes.com/) that delves into the mysterious world of female endurance walkers from the 19th century. I had never even known they existed and yet their stories are amazing! This was obviously a highly male dominated time period and these women proved their worth by walking for days straight beating the men's highest records and dealing with injuries, dehydration and illness. Their downfall came from negative publicity that turned the public against them but their stories need to be told. They achieved so much for women at that time and inspired many. I have been recommending this book to everyone and anyone!
Is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (136) really a “girl power” book? The only female character with any real power is Evil Incarnate. The girls are notably more active in the most recent movie version than in the book.
Rita wrote: "definitely not! Bella is your weird looking, loner girl. I think she shows many strengths like having the courage to move to Forks and actually study and make good grades. She isn't afraid to be different.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - she is weird and a loner but that DOES NOT MAKE HER WEAK! She is very tough! I don't notice any nasty people attacking her.
Katniss is also basically a loner! is she weird? She is certainly capable of killing lots of people which may mean she is a sociopath. Of course she was FORCED INTO IT.
Island of the Blue Dolphins. Is Karana weird and a loner? Of course she is but she was very strong to go back for her little brother. Does she look weird? Is she a loner? Or course! Should you throw her off this list?
