Julianne Dunn Mara's Thoughts:

- Half the Sky by Nick Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn - this is the book that cracked open women's rights issues around the world for me and made me want to learn and do more.
- The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander - this should be required reading - it's a powerful look at mass incarceration and the injustice in our justice system
- Girls Like Us by Rachel Lloyd - gave me the perspective and words I needed to talk about commercial sexual exploitation in the U.S.
- Women, Race & Class by Angela Davis - a critical analysis of the women's lib movement in the U.S., and how it's been impeded by the racist and classist biases of its leaders
- The Macho Paradox by Jackson Katz - frames violence against women as men's violence against women, and effectively articulates why men need to be involved as part of the solution to ending it.
- Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - an absolutely captivating novel by an incredible author and an intimate look at life inside an abusive home
- Life's Work by Dr. Willie Parker - a memoir from a southern, black, Christian, male OBGYN on why being an abortion provider is what he is called to do as a Christian. Even as someone who advocates for women's full access to reproductive health services, this book changed how I thought about abortion.
