Horror is a genre of fiction, but all of the ideas found in horror fiction spring first from the horrors of our own world.

This is a list of books that describe, analyze or examine the horror and terror of our reality, from descriptions of life in a gulag prison camp to pessimistic philosophy to the role and function of horror fiction.
