Virago Modern Classics are "dedicated to the celebration of women writers and to the rediscovery and reprinting of their works. Its aim was, and is, to demonstrate the existence of a female tradition in literature, and to broaden the sometimes narrow definition of a 'classic', which has often led to the neglect of interesting books."

Ditto the above also!I notice, though, that for some of the books the "default" GR edition seems to have crept in, in lieu of the actual Virago edition. Should we try to amend that? (I added some of the Viragos but hesitate to hit "combine," because that would just eliminate them again and make the list switch back to GR default ...)
That would only work, I think, if everyone delisted the default edition and voted for the Virago to replace it. And the defaults would probably creep back on eventually.
Depends on how well the list is monitored. On some other lists dedicated to specific editions it seems to be working ...

I really hate that we can only add 100 books >:(Here's another list

Much as I love Jane Eyre, (69), it doesn't belong on this list. Neither do 166, 170, 172, A Glass Full of Blessings, and Persuasion at 174. 178, 180, 185, 187 and at 91 the wrong edition of Jamaica Inn. I'm not at librarian and can't remove them. Hope this helps someone who can.Otherwise, a great list.

Are you sure the books you mentioned are not also published as a 'Virago Modern Classics'?
Surprisingly, Jane Austen and the Brontes are published under this imprint. In history, the modern period is any time from the mid to late 1700s (or even earlier if you include the early modern period), which would cover those books, but modernism in literature began around 1900, so I think Virago are cheating a little bit. But anyway, they have published those 19th-century books as "modern classics", so they do belong on this list.
