Listopia > Unaccounted Window Hints at Secret Room
A favourite plot device utilized by many a children's author. Especially Enid Blyton.
For example, the number of windows seen from outside a house don't match the ones which can be found from within. Or after cleaning the windows, a dirty one remains that was somehow missed. Or a window that can be seen can't be accessed.. you get the picture. It could even be the opposite - a missing window suggests a secret room or area, etc.
Life is full of grey areas, and so is this list - expect some ambiguity. This list doesn't have to be limited to Children's Fiction, but I'll bet it'll be heavily represented. ;)

The Adventure of the Norwood Builder (The Return of Sherlock Holmes) ALMOST qualifies for this list, as Holmes inspects the exterior and interior of the house to find a hidden room. Alas, the room is windowless ("lit by slits under the eaves"), and he discovers it by pacing the corridors upstairs and down and realising upstairs is a good 6 feet shorter.

The Secret of Moon Castle by Enid Blyton has a missing room, but MAY not have a window associated. I am leaving it in the list regardless, until someone can definitively say if a window or lack of a window is part of the discovery or not. From Robin's thread, message 9 by Crystal:
It's about a group of children moving into a new castle for a short stay. They realise that the distance between the walls and rooms don't add up (which means there is a secret passage)
The Mystery of the Locked Room has a secret lodger living in the locked attic room who only comes out at night. Not sure about windows being part of it, but just for reference.
