A lot of these look to be movies that were based on popular books, not books based on popular moviesd. Holes, Pet Sematary, Ready Player One, Fight Club, The Martian, The Maze Runner... Am I just missing something about the background of what inspired the books to begin with?

This is a really frustrating list! Is there any way to edit, to remove all the books that were the inspiration FOR their movies? I'm really having trouble with this prompt. I may just read a random Star Wars book, since they pretty much ALL are inspired by the series'. I wish I'd waited until this year to read Uhura's Song, so I could count it. I really liked it! I liked being able to visualize the characters and their voices (I could only find it as an ebook) I'm going to read another of Janet Kagan's books, Mirabile, but it has nothing to do with Star Trek.
I did find this one, Envoy: A Captain Sulu Adventure, at my library, on Overdrive, and it's audio! It says to "listen with headphones for the best experience". And it's narrated by George Takei!
Tracy wrote: "The prompt means books inspired by movies not movies inspired by books" There are so many books that inspired a movie on this list.
Glad I’m not the only one seeing dozens of entries that were books before they were movies instead of the other way round. Also looks like the majority were added by the same two people.
Leonore Fleischer made a career of writing novels based on movies. I added a few but if you check her out you will see a list of books suitable for this challenge.
I wonder what the definition of "popular" is :)I have the Crimson Peak novelisation on my TBR. The movie wasn't loved by critics (alas, given the cast), but it's Rotten Tomatoes rating is 73% (still "fresh"), and worldwide takings exceeded budget, at $74.7 million, against a budget of $55 million. Maybe that's as good a definition of popular as any?
