These are books, both fiction and not, that broadly cover the experiences of graduate students from underrepresented communities. Though this list was created with a DEI book club in mind, any book that follows an underrepresented student through their studies can fit in this list. The intention is to increase awareness of the challenges that accompany being a minority in higher education and therefore spark conversations about our own experiences and the overall climate of our universities. When reading these books, academics should ask ourselves: how can we improve the overall climate of our own community to make it a place that fosters and celebrates diverse people, thoughts, and experiences?
