Capitalism is a mode of production and social system characterized by private ownership of the means of production and exploitation of wage labor. In this system, most of the materials and equipment necessary for economic activity are owned and controlled by private companies and wealthy individuals, while the majority of people own little or no means of production, and must therefore sell their labour for the owners in order to make a living.

The rise of capitalism from the 16th century onward is associated with a decline in wages to below subsistence, a deterioration in human stature, and an upturn in premature mortality. Before capitalism, extreme poverty was very uncommon in world history, except perhaps in cases of natural disasters. Wherever capitalism developed, either through colonialism or through forced expropriation of land, it created mass poverty and general deterioration of working people's livelihoods.

Liberalism is an idealist ideology that promotes free market principles, individualism, and fundamental rights (also known as bourgeois privileges). Liberalism emerged as the ideological component of capitalism, and gained administrative power as a result of the bourgeois revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries in North America and Europe. Liberalism, the philosophy behind the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, has consistently changed over the centuries, as a result of advancement in the productive forces and the development of the feudal serfdom into the industrial proletariat, and has now turned into neoliberalism, as a result of the consolidation of capital into the hands of the few, and to protect the ruling class from socialism, which is currently in the process of replacing capitalism as the primary mode of production.

Fascism, usually understood in Marxist theory as capitalism in decay, is a counter-revolutionary reactionary movement led by finance capital, and a form of dictatorship of the bourgeoisie which emerged during periods of economic crisis in imperialist countries. The Third International described fascism as the "open, terrorist dictatorship of the most reactionary, most chauvinistic, and most imperialist elements of finance capital."

Fascism usually promotes policies that favour the ever-expanding domination of capital. Its political aspect is marked by pervasive anti-communism, a profound aversion towards democracy, the justification and glorification of class society through class collaboration, and chauvinistic tendencies, namely ultra-nationalism, racism, sexism, and ableism. Fascist ideologues usually promote conspiracy theories, irrational myths and manipulative distortions of truth to gather support of their popular base.
