Welcome to the Ancient & Medieval Historical Fiction Group Recommended Reading list.
This is a list of books that are popular in our group and that get nominated in our Monthly Group Read Polls.
Members and Non Members are welcome to use this list to get ideas on what historical fiction to read and are welcome to vote for the books you like the best.
We cannot guarantee that these books will all be 5 star reads for you, so check out the books reviews as well.
You will see that only #1 in a series is ever added (aside from Last of the Mohicans & Lionheart). While #1 may not be the best book in a series, we want to encourage people to try the series from the beginning.
Oh, and keep an eye on the list! From time to time, as books prove popular in group we shall add them here and the 4 books we vote on, approx 6th of each month, for our Group Read will be added to the list monthly.

Of the four books selected to be in our December Group Read Polls, two are already on the list. The four are
Memnon and Vlad the Last Confession are being added.
Four books added 7th December 2012. These are the four nominees in the January 2013 group Read Polls
These are the four nominees in the August 2013 Group Read Polls. (Some of these books were already on the list so only one needed to be added).
Terri, How about adding Pressfield's
The Afghan Campaign? I thought it as good or better than
Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae? More thoughtful vs more action-oriented...
These are the four nominees in the February 2014 Group Read polls. Two are already on the list and two have been added. (94)
This book was accidentally removed from the list a few months ago. It has now been added back on. (99)
These are the four nominees in the MAY 2014 Group Read Polls. All four have been added to the list. (107)
These are the four nominees in the JUNE 2014 Group Read Polls. All four have been added to the list. (111)
These are the four nominees in the JULY 2014 Group Read Polls. Two of the four were already on the list. Ironfire and The Last Templar have been added. (113)
Marita wrote: "May I suggest Martin Lake's excellent Lost King series?"Hi Marita,
Thanks for the suggestion, but this authors books don't fit the guidelines. Books that get on the recommended reading list have to be books that have proven hugely popular in group discussions and are available in multiple outlets Internationally, ie library, book store and online book stores in multiple countries. Or they have to be a book chosen for the group read polls. And, as above, to be in a group read poll they have to be available in multiple countries, in libraries and books stores.
These are the four nominees in the AUGUST 2014 Group Read Polls. Three of the books are already on the list. Only The Kingmaking has been added. (114)
The four nominees for the October 2014 Group Reads. Three of the four have been added. Wolf Hall was already on the list.

NB* three books from the September Group Read that were added to the list in August, were removed for various reasons. Only I Claudius stayed on the list which made the total number added in August (115)
The 4 nominees for the JUNE 2015 Group Reads and the 4 nominees for the JULY 2015 Group Reads and the 4 nominees for the AUGUST group reads have been added to the list.

Artemas wrote: "Quite a few books on here that cover neither Ancient or Medieval periods."That would matter if it were an Ancient & Medieval Era list, Artemas. As outlined in both the title and the list description, it is a reading list for a Goodreads group called Ancient & Medieval Historical Fiction Group. Books are added to the list based on activities happening in that reading group.

Silly of me to think that a group named "Ancient and Medieval Historical Fiction Group" would have a reading list focused on Ancient and Medieval Historical Fiction.
Artemas wrote: "Silly of me to think that a group named "Ancient and Medieval Historical Fiction Group" would have a reading list focused on Ancient and Medieval Historical Fiction. ."Yep, very silly. If you were a member and actually gave a shit about the group you might have celebrated how this lists works for a group you aren't in, instead of making an obtuse, ignorant comment to complete strangers.
Good thing you aren't in A&M though, as pedants who hunger for pointless shit stirring aren't a good match for the friendly community of readers that congregate in A&M and actually use this list on a regular basis.
I've blocked you and will no longer view your posts. This exchange is over from my end. It was about as productive as sticking pins in my eyes and I have moved on.
The two nominees in the February 2016 Group Read Poll. Troy was already on the list. Ivanhoe has been added to the list.

Funny thing is that I was a member of your "group," but decided to leave since you clearly have issues. Looks like I made the right call.
Issue with Number 19 on the List. It was originally added under its English title The Iron King. The title has recently changed of its own volition to the Spanish title El rey de hierro.
The issue is, I can't seem to simply swap the title. *scratches head*
If I delete the title currently showing on our Listopia List, so I can add it again under the English title, people will lose their votes and the book will no longer retain its No: 19 placement on the list.

Can you add it twice? Then it doesn't necessarily fall out of position. It does look a little out of place with the Spanish title. I know that doesn't seem like an ideal solution but I would hate to see it removed completely since it seems to be a well liked book.
I did wonder about that option. But then anybody who speaks Spanish as well as English would wonder why the heck we have two of the iron King on the list.If only I could find a way to swap it. Like I can do in our group read polls. At any stage I can swap editions and it doesn't ruin the amount of votes on the book in the poll.
I'll have another look in Listopia features. Just to be sure I can't swap editions.
Maybe I can ask Goodreads if they can swap it to the English for me.
