I pre-ordered Kowal's first book based on my impression of this short story alone. Superb.

I am a bit worried that you live up a mountain in a forestie sorta place and know not your hobbits from your trolls. I hope your husband doesn't let you out alone until you realise that

hobbits are hobbitsies - all short, furry feet and in need of many breakfasts.

trolls are all trollesque in stature - they are heap ugly and carry sacks to make hobbitsies, and you, their breakfast.

LOL! just found this! Hobbits must be like black bears which are just out and very hungry. (we had to quit feeding the birds) I just faced many thirsty vampires in the dark damp hemlock woods of Forks and came back ok! (or maybe I am OK?)
