Listopia > Most influential books under 100 pages
To qualify for this list each book/edition must have fewer than 100 pages, according to Goodreads data. My intention is for us to vote on the widespread influence of the books, not whether we liked them.
If you are adding a book to the list that has multiple editions, please add an edition that has fewer than 100 pages. If you see a book that doesn't meet the requirements of this list please comment and I will remove it. Thanks!

I assume we are meant to vote on the widespread influence of the books, not whether we liked them. I've interpreted influence to mean influencing political ideas e.g. the Communist Manifesto or Animal Farm, or influencing the development of artistic ideas e.g. TS Eliot influenced poetry and Gogol influenced absurdism in literature.
Reese wrote: "Some of the publications listed are longer than 100 pages. I can't find an edition of THE CONSOLATION OF PHILOSOPHY that has 100 or fewer pages. THE REPUBLIC ??? I added an edition of RIP VAN WIN..."This is bothering me as well. I suspect by and large what matters for purposes of this list is the length of the treatise/story/text or, for that matter, play as such, minus introduction and commentary. (As in, it's the text itself and not its modern-day appendage which is so tremendously influential.) I do think we should try to include editions that have less than 100 pages, though; at least initially, even if they may later on get merged into some more lavishly garnished and, hence, longer once duplicates start to be added down the road.
Lisa wrote: "I assume we are meant to vote on the widespread influence of the books, not whether we liked them."Yes, that's my assumption, too.
Lisa wrote: "I assume we are meant to vote on the widespread influence of the books, not whether we liked them." That's right.

I expect in most cases that this will be the 'bare-bones' edition which contains the original text and little else.
Thanks.
Also, does anyone know how I can remove The Republic? (over 400 pages)

Only Goodreads librarians can remove books. Let us know which books you want deleted, and there are typically several librarians who will be happy to help out.
Thanks for the clarification on page numbers; will bear that in mind. Minor caveat, though, that if duplicate editions of the same book are inadvertently added and subsequently combined (to remove the erroneous duplicate), the GR system will automatically merge all editions into the most popular one (regardless whether that one had already been added to the list), which in this particular instance will, in many cases, probably be an edition that has more than 100 pages, due to the addition of introductions, commentary etc.

Taking off my vote now, BTW, et cum spiritu tuo, 2013
I've removed The Republic and also Winnie the Pooh as the editions on the list were both over 100 pages.
The Call of the Wild is less than 100 pages long? Well that's funny because I could BARELY get through the first two chapters .__.
Just deleted a bunch of books from the list. Please read and follow instructions before adding a book. Thanks.
This list contains 4 women. Thats disgusting. I was hoping for something good to read from this list, but men dicking all over the 18th and 19th century makes me want to cry.
ooops - I just went through adding what was on the list that I had encountered and noticed that not all of these qualify for the list parametres **gasp**Many are well over 100 pages.

Which ones?
This is one of my favorite lists! I'm dedicating a lot of my reading time this year to working through the gaps I have at the top of this list.
Maddie wrote: ""The Communist Manifesto" is listed as 304 pages."Indeed it is.
Unfortunately, Goodreads has a habit of changing the edition of books on the list to the most popular edition without consulting the list manager, or even providing an option to revert to the originally selected edition. When this list was started, the most popular edition was the 68 page one, and that one was displayed. But now the 304 page edition is the most popular so that one shows up on the list instead. At the moment there's nothing I can do about it.
If enough people write to Goodreads admin maybe this glitch will eventually be fixed.

Yeah, this list is messed up. Since the last note about women more must have been added, which is great. However, the #1 title, Animal Farm with 190 votes, is 122 pages. Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own is also over. 3 classics listed--A Christmas Carol, The Strange Case....Jekyll/Hyde, and Jack London's Call of the Wild--are all well over 100 except when grossly edited down, which is exactly what Dover does. At this rate we might as well toss in a bunch of crib notes and pretend they're the genuine article, right? At first I thought maybe some culling could save it, but it's so riddled with errors that it would be easier to toss it and start a new list.

Ishtar wrote: "Why are there books with foreign languages included?"First of all, GR tends to change a title to the most popular one (so it is no use really voting for a certain edition) and if the book was originally written in a 'foreign' language, it may be the most popular one. Second, why shouldn't there be books in foreign languages, translations from/into English available or not? "Most influential" is in the eye of the beholder, after all; there are a few titles/authors on this list I've never heard of.
Booklovinglady wrote: "Ishtar wrote: "Why are there books with foreign languages included?"First of all, GR tends to change a title to the most popular one (so it is no use really voting for a certain edition) and if t..."
True that. GR is available internationally, and usually if people complain it's about the dominance of the English language. But that was going to happen, since this site was originally the avocation of a Californian (before he sold it to Amazon).
Genevieve wrote: "Love Story by Erich Segal is longer than 100"I must say I don't know who added it but there is a Slovak edition (Príbeh našej lásky) which is less than 100 pages (and of course you know that GR changes books to the most popular edition). My own edition of Siddhartha for instance is more than 100 pages but the edition mentioned here (Siddhartha) is substantially less...
My edition of The Prince (De heerser) is also far more than 100 pages, yet the edition mentioned here isn't.
To stick to English books: The edition mentioned here of Of Mice and Men is slightly over 100 pages but there is a Kindle edition (Of Mice and Men) which is far below 100... And so on and so forth :-)
