Perhaps instead of turning down your nose at those of us who love romance heroes and vampires, you should nominate your favorite male book character and see how many votes 'he' generates. Just a thought! :)
Maybe there should be a "Non-romance" best male character list? It could be all "literary classics".
Well said Shawna. If you haven't read the books or don't like the choices available, add to the list. That's what I did! It's a very simple process ...

That's a good idea Auntee!Tammy wrote: "If you haven't read the books or don't like the choices available, add to the list. That's what I did! It's a very simple process ..."
Very true Tammy! I added a couple to the list that are non-romance, like Lonesome Dove because Augustus 'Gus' McCrae is one of my favorite male characters, ever!
I love Laura Kinsale's Male characters, they're some of my favorite men from Romance novels EVAH. Her Green Knight, for example or her Hawaiian ninja dude from The Shadow and the Star... The Prince of Midnight. That woman can write a man to love...

I've always preferred Edward Rochester, myself.

Frankly, if you find Pip from Great Expectations to be the best male character, romance aside, then I can't sympathize, LOL. Now... Rochester or Darcy or any other number of characters in fiction, I can understand.
Ah, Edward! He's dark, mysterious, and wealthy. What more could a girl ask for?
I tend to like the tortured soul/misunderstood/underdog male characters the best. Thankfully there are plenty of them to choose from!
I can't believe I am the first person to include Pete Hamill's Forever and Northriver! I fell in love with the leads by the second page!
Danielle, I'm usually content if the lead male is just one of those things, but all three... NICE!You've definitely peaked my interest, Katherine. :)
Gully Foyle - The Stars My Destination, by Alfred Bester
Heh Davis you reminded of the awesome Gully Foyle. Here are my top 10 of the characters :
Parker - The Hunter
Conan - Complete Conan
Gully Foyle - The Stars My Destination
The Continental OP - Red Harvest
Horatio Hornblower - Hornblower and The Hotspur
Cugel - Cugel's Saga
Edmond Dantes - The Count of Monte Cristo
Robert Neville - I Am Legend
James Bond - Casino Royale
Sherlock Holmes
Jace Wayland of course! He is funny ! Very sarcastic! Sexy and hot!
For me.. he is the Best Male Character! :)
I can't seem to find Atlus Shrugged anywhere on this list. And there are so many incredible male characters to choose from!Francis D'anconia, Ragnar Danneskjold, John Galt, for god's sakes!
Adding now...
Kiiks wrote: "...romantic, lover-type characters?? Or vampires. I am so sick of vampires."I agree. I guess unless you're a strapping, lustful lumberjack, or a brooding, teenage blood sucker you won't make it very far on this list.

Don't forget Hank Reardon!
Edward Cullen? Really guys? Really? Ugh. I am ready for the new trend to set in. I am so sick of the vampire franchise.

Amen.
Edward Cullen makes me feel ill. I would have slapped him in the face and told him to take a midol. Lord, he irritates me. Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson as a character in Alice I have Been is one of the most interesting. Not the best but fascinating.

Thanks for posting Hornblower!
I don't mind some romance books, (who doesn't have the guilty pleasure of reading about intimacy and sex), but all the vampire books that have started coming out since Twilight are getting to be a bit much. I think it's time for a new fad in the book world. But that's just me.
Kiiks wrote: "Another thing~why is it that the majority of the male characters this list revolves around must be romantic, lover-type characters?? Or vampires. I am so sick of vampires."Agreed!
*twitchtwitch*PATCH is above Edmond Dantes? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? AND WESTLEY?
Someone please explain to me how a fallen angel who tries to kill his love interest multiple times rates that high.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND.

And Edward is #1??????
That I expected. But under no circumstances should Patch rate higher than Westley. NO. CIRCUMSTANCES.
whatiswrongwiththisworld.

So many things Anila, so many, many things. All we can do is shake our heads and weep for the future.

Agreed, agreed, agreed. I don't even like Mr.Darcy and I don't understand how Edward Cullen beat him. Or how Patch beat Harry Potter. Or how Daniel Grigori is on this list at all. Abusive jerk love interests who say over and over how little they want to do with you? That's what's required to be 'the Best'? *facekeyboard*
Hmmm...so we have a controlling, stalker-like, abusive sparkly vampire in first place for best character...Ok then.
Becca wrote: "The SummoningI don't want to look through the whole list. But Derek from the Darkest Powers Series had better be there."
i don't know, he kinda gives me the creeps. simon is much nicer.
Try a new book, DREAM OF ME by Jennifer Froelich. Colin is not a vampire or a "god" or any of the other fads. He is just a really great guy who meets a real girl in his dreams. You will love him! Amazon has it.
Frostbite's up there so that should mean Adrian! But he's still under Edward Cullen! He sparkles is that not bad enough???
Tam Lin (Sir John) in The Ballad of Young Tam Lin. Handsome, sexy, sensual, and torn between love for the mother of his unborn child, and his devotion to the eternal Goddess who is the Queen of Summerland.
