I Feel the Book of the new sun by Gene Wolfe should be in this list. It's a fabulous work depicting life on an earth so far into the future that all the mountains have been carved into statues of great men who have been long forgotten. The sun is growing dim. It follows the exploits of a young man brought up in the guild of torturers, expelled for taking pity on his victim. He carries a blunt tipped sword made for beheadings, and wears a cloak so dark a black that no aspect of it can be seen. Amazing creatures and events lurk around every turn of the page. This is a truly great read.
