Magician: Apprentice/Master could be counted as 1 book as the author intended.

The Hobbit set the mold and to me is the quintessential fantasy novel. Lord Fouls Bane is the protagonist you love to hate, if you hat Thomas Covenant in this book the author had done a great job. The Name of the Wind broke the mold for me, changed the way fantasy was written. Magician: Apprentice/Master is just a solid fantasy with a the best balance of character driven story plots and world building at the same time.
