Listopia > Directory of Queer Disabled BIPOC Books
About This Directory
This is an attempt to curate a directory of books that center queer, disabled and BIPOC experiences within the text itself by authors sharing the same experiences.
It can include both fiction and non-fiction where these identities are meaningfully present and central to the narrative, themes, or subject matter. The goal is to create a space for discovering books that reflect lived, embodied, and intersectional experiences on the page.
Books included here should meet the following:
• The book centers queer, disabled, and/or BIPOC identities in a meaningful way (eg main character in a fiction book)
• The author has publicly identified with at least one of those identities (where information is available)
What Is Not Included
• Books where marginalised identities are absent, minor, purely incidental or not centric (eg just a side character)
• Books included only because of the author’s identity
• Works where identity has been assumed without confirmation
Definitions
Queer: An umbrella term for people whose sexual orientation and/or gender identity is not heterosexual and/or cisgender (e.g., LGBTQIAP+ - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual/Aromatic, Pansexual, Polyam identities and more).
Disabled: Includes people with physical, sensory, intellectual, disabilities, as well as those who are chronically ill and/or neurodivergent and mental illnesses and more.
BIPOC: Stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color—referring to people who experience racial and ethnic marginalisation, especially in contexts shaped by colonialism and systemic racism.
DISCLAIMER
The point of this directory is to encourage readers to read marginalised experiences and broaden their reading. It is not meant to police identities or start discussions on what 'counts', or force authors to reveal personal details. It should be based on only publicly available information. Readers are encouraged to use their own discretion and do their own research before reading. Authors can add their own books if they wish.
This is an ongoing, imperfect, and community-informed resource and relies on public, self-disclosed information.
This Directory is being started on 5th May, 2026.
