Renae yeah. i didn't see it though

message 7: by Maura (new)

Maura I heard the movie was terrible.

message 8: by Michaelbrent (new)

Michaelbrent Collings For consideration on this list:

Billy: Messenger of Powers by Michaelbrent Collings (check it out at www.whoisbillyjones.com)

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) "The Hunger Games" and Grisham's "The Firm" and "The Street Lawyer" -- suitable for kids under 10 years old?!

message 10: by Olivia (new)

Olivia The golden compass is a really bad book and movie. How it got onto this list, I have NO idea. Don't waste your time with it.

message 11: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I don't think the later Harry potter books are suitable for children under 10 years old.

message 12: by Suzy (new)

Suzy I wonder who compiled this list. There were some exceptional classics. Some notable omissions as well -- for example any books by Rumer Godden. Or My Father's Dragon. Anyone out there read Twig?

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Suzy, everybody can add books to this list. That's how it was compiled (and how the order of books is determined and updated): Somebody puts a book on the list because they believe it should be here, and others vote on it -- and the more votes (and the higher the ranks assigned to books by the individual voters), the higher a given book moves on the list.

If you feel there are books missing from this list, it's easy to add them: Just click on the tab "add books to this list" (up top, next to "all votes"), perform a search either from among your own bookshelves or from the entire Goodreads database, hit the "vote" button ... eh voilà! :)

message 14: by Ivan (new)

Ivan My father's dragon is in there somewhere.

message 15: by Ellinor (new)

Ellinor I wonder what some people consider as "fantasy". There are great books on the list like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Little Princess or Farmer Boy which just aren't fantasy books. Maybe some of the storylines may seem unrealistic but that's not what makes a book belong to the category "fantasy".

message 16: by Elizabeth (last edited Dec 07, 2012 10:36AM) (new)

Elizabeth How is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a fantasy novel?

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Yes, there are plenty of books on this list that don't seem to fit the criteria.

Janis, do you want a librarian to lend a hand in cleaning up the list a bit?

message 18: by Krishanu (new)

Krishanu Chatterjee Hello everybody.
I am new to goodreads. Could anyone please tell me about a book where the children in the story find a device ( a magical object ) and then do plenty of naughty things with that. For example : he gets a device which can freeze someone and then he uses it for a various naughty activities.Your help will be much appreciated.

Regards

message 19: by Dawn (last edited Nov 07, 2013 04:44PM) (new)

Dawn I only voted for the 1st book in a series (otherwise my list would be easily twice as long!).

But I am wondering how The Little Princess, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Farmer Boy got on the list, as they are not fantasy at all, although admittedly classic children's lit.

message 20: by Ash (new)

Ash Coe I find it hard to understand how the Hobbit is topping Harry Potter when most children I grew up with had never even heard of the Hobbit until the Lord of the Rings films came out. This leads me to believe that the list is highly influenced by the new Hobbit films and not on the book's merit at all

message 21: by Mitchell (new)

Mitchell Friedman I read The Hobbit to my kindergartner back in 1999. It worked exceedingly well as a work of children's fantasy, and quite a bit better in that respect than LotR.

message 22: by Mitchell (new)

message 24: by Andrew (new)

Andrew The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and The Moon of Gomrath (both Alan Garner) were favourites of mine as a child. Also The Princess and the Goblin (George MacDonald)

message 25: by Urooj (new)

Urooj I'm making a list of books that I want to read in my life and THIS is helping me a lot.Only one request:when there is a series books ,please put them together,'cause I have to go on Wikipedia everytime that I see a series book to make the list ordinative!

Lists on goodreads don't work like this. They are ordered by votes. However most books on goodreads are annotated with their series information. Just click on the book and look for the link in parenthesis to the right of the title.

message 27: by Cindy (new)

Cindy What is The Picture of Dorian Grey doing in this list?? Children fantasy????????

message 28: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Mitchell wrote: "I read The Hobbit to my kindergartner back in 1999. It worked exceedingly well as a work of children's fantasy, and quite a bit better in that respect than LotR."

My father read it to me when I was 6, thus sparking a lifelong love of fantasy. And that was in the late 70s.

message 29: by Zahra (new)

Zahra HELLO EVERYBODY

message 30: by Nada (new)

Nada Sobhi How did The Picture of Dorian Gray make it to this list? It's not exactly children's/YA....

message 31: by Mitchell (new)

Mitchell Friedman Nada wrote: "How did The Picture of Dorian Gray make it to this list? It's not exactly children's/YA...."

It's #329 so on page 4. I'm inclined to remove it - but I haven't read it.
