I am usually reluctant to not finish a book, but as my time becomes more precious, there are some I just don't get involved in. I'm interested to see what others give up on and why. I don't know if there is a way to add comments and people can tell us when we should give it another try, but that would be great also.

It makes me sad that the Life of Pi is on here... the first few chapters are slow but it gets really great, i promise!

& Wicked, YES. I tried and tried with that book and i just couldnt do it. I gave up like 50 pages in.

I don't like to leave a book abandoned. I do have a few that I'm yet to finish but I do get around to them... eventually.

I've found a lot of the hardest books for me to finish are those I can't relate to, or those that are written so terribly that I'm not quite sure why I started them in the first place.

I think the book that sat "abandoned" for the longest before being finished for me was Stephen King's "Insomnia" which took a few months to read! I haven't exactly pinpointed the reason why but it was some combination of the length of wandering around and the much older age of the characters.

Some books I gave up on, like Ulysses, are just unreadable, but others, like House of Sand and Fog were well written, but I knew bad things were going to happen, and I just didn't want to read about them.

Are you sure they don't automatically renumber?

I was automatically signed up to follow this thread when I commented upon it some time ago. I then received an email notifying me that someone had posted in it. When I followed the link to read the message, I noticed that my message was gone.

That got me curious, so I started paying attention to make sure I wasn't imagining things. The number of comments grew, and then it suddenly shrunk.

Unless I am delusional, it appears to me that someone has been vandalizing the comments for this list.

Haha, yeah, I picked up "Life of Pi" off my teacher's bookshelf the day I forgot my book and started at the beginning and was bored so I flipped to the middle-yes I'm one of those ppl who reads random chapters in the middle of books to see if they're worth reading- and found it to be rather amusing. Now it's on my to-read list.

there are some seriously kick ass books here- granted, many should have been put down and also they really do need to be personally interesting to you (your own list matched mine in many ways), but seriously give some of these another go.

kite-runner
catcher in the rye - love this book to pieces.
million little pieces - absolutely over rated, but still a good read.
god of the small things.

All the little questions are answered in the last chapter. Irving starts off slow the the story really does gain momentum.

I am one of the unfortunate people who can't abandon books, even if they are pure crap. But there have been many I considered to abandon them at one point: Life of Pi, The Secret History, The Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and The Shipping News were too boring, The Lost Symbol was absolutely rotten, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge and Me and Platero were too slow, though turned out to be enthralling at some moments and Reading Lolita at Tehran was just... bad.

I can't believe how many books I have abandoned! I think I abandoned even more than I marked - but couldn't remember and am kind of obsessive about not lying. HA! But I guess that's how it goes. Also interesting that some of my favorites are on here - that goes to show - you have to try it yourself!

I'm not surprised that other people felt the same as I did about Wicked. I made it through that book but fell short when reading Son of the Witch. Gluten for punishment or keeping up the illusion that it was going to get better. I wish I would have stopped after Wicked.

For the most part, I abandoned these books because they were insufferably dull. I originally listed some of these books on the "Worst Books Ever" but then I realized it wasn't fair to rate them as such, if I never bothered to finish them.

I agree that it sucks to give up on a book... I try to be more selective now as to what I will or will not read.

To anyone who abandoned 100 Years of Solitude:
Please go back to it, maybe the first pages are slow or you get lost, but you should go back to it. the first time I read this book I did it with a piece of paper and pencil in order to draw a family tree, since the names are repeated over and over; but it's so worth it. It's one of my favorites and I read it every two years (I've have read it about 10 times)and every time I open the book it feels like the first time.

This list makes me more confident about reading such books as Atlas Shrugged and Ulysses. Wicked is one of my all time favorite books (besides The Old Man and the Sea)and Life of Pi was great for me. All a matter of opinion, I suppose.

FYI: I did not post all of the books here, in fact many are among my favorites. I just assumed you can add books to other peoples lists. I do find it interesting that the same books that are loved by many are also on the abandoned list. I'm never more aware than with books of the vast array of opinions and tastes out there.

Classics are often hated. Sometimes because we are forced to read them. Bestsellers are often hated. Maybe it's because we feel forced to read them to keep up with society? Or maybe it's just statistics: the more people that know about it, the more will either love it or hate it. Weird...

I don't blame anyone who abandoned War and frigging Peace. It took me a year to read that book. Not because it was so damn long but because it's probably the most dry book ever written. I basically finished it for the novelty of saying I read a book over 1000 pages. Looking back it was so not worth it.

If you don't consider it "cheating" try your abandoned books on CD. Not only can you do other things while you listen, but sometimes the performers make all the difference in world in making them interesting! There are some REALLY good voice actors out there!!

I agree, but the reader can make all the difference. The YA readers are usually great, but it's hit or miss with the adult books.

I agree and part of it is because we are forced to read them. I rarely hate a best seller unless someone is cramming it down my throat. I never read one to keep up with society but I have read a few so I could answer neverending quiz questions, LOL!

I think every book I've ever given up on was already on this list, which makes me feel a tiny bit less guilty. Also, it would be hilarious to cross-reference this with the "Books Everyone Should Read" list. Most of these are there. (As noted above, the more people tell you that you have to read something, the less appealing it becomes)

I sure agree with you. So many have nagged me to read certain books and it makes me feel like I am back in school for some required reading not for pleasure.
