Debbie What about Time's Arrow by Martin Amis?

message 2: by Lois (new)

Lois I would add in any book at all by Dennis Lehane. I've just read about 6 of his books recently, and they all had great twists in them...sometimes several...that kept each story really interesting!

message 3: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Lydia Many of the books had endings that i saw a mile away.

message 4: by Minglis (new)

Minglis i am legend's was genius i thought. it really angered me when they completely neglected it in smith's film adaptation.

message 5: by Lynda (new)

Lynda Sommer did not see the ending of the manufactured identity at all....freaky, going to rereD it

message 6: by Raven (new)

Raven Dane Company of Liars by Karen Maitland....an astonishing book that defies pigeon holing into any one genre. It has intriguing plot twists and turns and jaw-dropping surprises yet it totally believable and ultimately satisfying. One book that will linger in your imagination forever.

message 7: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Mofkrit Lynda, didn;t call it either. That's why I read the rest. He seems to be getting better as they go

message 8: by Danna (new)

Danna nice one :)

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

This is the perfect list for me! I'm that person that NEVER sees the twist coming, but it kinda makes reading more fun ^_^

message 10: by Mickey (new)

Mickey HUGE HARRY POTTER FAN!!!

I HEART DRACO!!!

message 12: by Jane (new)

Jane Never could've guessed the ending.

message 13: by Katty (new)

Katty What was the big twist in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? It's a great book, but I don't recall anything that shocking.

message 14: by Danna (new)

Danna Katty wrote: "What was the big twist in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? It's a great book, but I don't recall anything that shocking."

The Harry Potters - all of them - were not shocking, none of them had a true wow-never-seen-that-coming moment. The fantastic world is just very well built - that's what's so original about this book, and that is it. I totally agree.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Katty wrote: "What was the big twist in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? It's a great book, but I don't recall anything that shocking."

Snape is actually a good guy, Harry Potter gets killed, but doesn't die, oh and Narcissa Malfoy saves Harry's ass. :)

I think no one so the third one. I mean did you really see Sirius Black being the good guy, and Wormtail being Ron's rat.

message 17: by Danna (new)

Danna I don't actually remember (I was about 6 years old when I first read it), but everything pretty much builds up to the point where the 'twist' is revealed. We get all the information throughout the book and in the end we see that, for example, Ron's rat is actually Wormtail, but it's not like it was completely unexepcted, it lays somewhere beneath the surface of your mind.
It was an amazing series, nonetheless.

message 18: by Maxime (new)

Maxime Why does every single list has to include Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. There are tons more shocking books out there!

message 22: by Vishal (new)

Vishal I think Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected warrants inclusion of this list, even if its a collection of short stories.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads You could add it; it's easy to add books to lists. At the top of the list, at the tab next to "all votes."

Thanks Susanna. Will do that.

I'm new here so any guidance is much appreciated :-)

message 25: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Finnie Several books on this list have no twist at all. That's not an attack on their quality but I'd question why they're on this list.

message 26: by Ofor (new)

Ofor For a novel with real twists try reading Nfudu - Skirts, Ties, and Taboos. It's set in 1960's Paris. It has themes of love, crime, war, etc. I never saw any of it coming.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads You could add it to the list. (It's easy to add books to lists; at the top, at the tab next to "all votes.")

Lmarie P Shaun wrote: "Several books on this list have no twist at all. That's not an attack on their quality but I'd question why they're on this list."

I agree. It makes it hard to select a new book from the list because I can't trust the list.

message 29: by Janet (new)

Janet Numan I wouldn't have put the Hunger Games/Harry Potter books on this list as none of them were really "shocking" unless people are counting the character twist in the last one...?

message 30: by Roslyn (new)

Roslyn March Horn-Horn by ADT McLellan

No contest.

message 31: by DavidYoung (new)

DavidYoung Lord of the flies just a great reading!

message 33: by Saliha (last edited Feb 04, 2024 03:17PM) (new)

Saliha I read False Ratio recently and it had quite a clever twist, nothing like anything I read before.

message 34: by Lucy (new)
