I am afraid that some of the books listed do not provide a slice of "contemporary life". I had voted for several others but deleted them because they were not set in the last 25 years. Example: "The Good Earth & "The Book Thief"
Am I right?

What country does The Lovely Bones visit except the US and I don't recall much about travel. Did I miss something?

Are they only supposed to be contemporary? I voted for a ton of stuff I just thought fit into cultures and countries outside our own but didn't stick to any kinda timeline...

I feel like the same rotating 5-10 books are the top of every single list on Goodreads, no matter the topic =S sigh!

Written in an easy to read format, it is satisfying on many levels; cultural, religious, family, generational and genealogical all at once. I love her visits back to Argentina and the "coming home" to California experience. I want a sequel to be written!"

I'll find (or create) a "Strange, faraway culture" list then which is exclusively for US books... :D

I'd add "Days and Nights on the Grand Trunk Road" by Anthony Weller to the list. One of the best travel books I've read. It's a bit dated now but I covered roughly the same ground in India as he did during roughly the same period and Weller brought it all back for me. He went on into Pakistan, which I didn't (I opted for Nepal instead). This was when the Taliban was just taking hold of Afghanistan, part of why he halted at Khyber Pass. Weller combined personal observations and encounters, history, cultural explorations, and what were then current events in the region. I agree with one of the reviewers; you feel like you're right there in the car with him. This book received nowhere near the attention it deserved.
