Danna Voted for Charlotte Bronte's book :) I wish I could read every single note she wrote. Her, and Margaret Mitcehll's (Gone with The Wind). And Louisa M.Alcott

message 2: by Ben (last edited Jun 22, 2012 11:17AM) (new)

Ben Great list, because some otherwise fine authors can produce some real duds (Margaret Atwood, Ernest Hemmingway, I'm looking at you!), so it's good to distinguish those whose collected works are of an exceptional caliber.

I hear you: e.g. Recently read a John Kellerman novel that did not feature his detective, Alex Delaware---found it to be clumsy, artificial, inept, and for that very reason interesting.

message 4: by Hanne (new)

Hanne wow, 88 people and so far no Gabriel Garcia Marquez? Am i the only fan on this planet? ;))
at least it's on the list now, just hoping i won't stay the only fan!

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) I see the "please only one book per author" plea is being disregarded: To the extent that those loading the list with second and third helpings from the same author have also voted for the the book most other voters have chosen as their example/show piece of a given favorite author's writing, do you want the extra books to be removed, Thom?

I do. And soon I will check my own list. But I wouldn't want you to spend valuable time doing it.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) OK, just let us know if you want any fellow editors to lend a hand.

message 8: by Adriana (new)

Adriana FYI, Mark Twain is on the list twice. At #29 with Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn, and at #170 with Tom Sawyer.

message 9: by Donna (last edited Jun 04, 2013 09:29PM) (new)

Donna Davis It seems sort of bogus to vote for writers who are dead and wrote only one book. I loved To Kill a Mockingbird, too, and would have been happy to give a second book a try had she written another...but who knows? I don't advocate for removing the book from the list, but would like people to think twice before adding a writer who only has one book published.

Argh! Sooo many almost-but-not-quite writers here! I love almost all of Stephen King's work, but almost is not "everything". Likewise Alexander Graham McCall (Africa yes, Europe no). A good list for analyzing one's own habits and tastes.

Duplications for Agatha Christie (4 of them as of this writing), Stephen King, and Terry Pratchett (beginning and end). Also, duplicate Hemingway.

Finally: I am shamelessly soliciting people to vote for Dr. Seuss! Dr. Seuss! (*Chant, stomp bleachers*) He has belatedly entered the list and is on the dead last page, for now at least!

message 10: by Alex (new)

Alex Pizarro Very good list. I want to read some of this books soooooo bad! and got some good recomendations from it

message 11: by Jane (new)

Jane Schrader's novels of Sparta would make the list for me but I'm not so interested in her others: medieval and modern. Same with Douglas Jackson--love his Hero of Rome series, but Rufus I have no interest in reading.

message 12: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited Jun 19, 2016 03:56PM) (new)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Adriana wrote: "FYI, Mark Twain is on the list twice. At #29 with Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn, and at #170 with Tom Sawyer."

I don't think you can avoid an author being twice on the list anymore, as there are more than 700 titles to go through now... And as GR only shows which titles you've read/want to read, and not the authors you've read, it would mean going through all the titles one by one to see if your favourite author is there (and I know I didn't...)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads "Combining duplicates" would not get that instance, either.

message 14: by Terrence (new)

Terrence Donna wrote: "It seems sort of bogus to vote for writers who are dead and wrote only one book. I loved To Kill a Mockingbird, too, and would have been happy to give a second book a try had she written another......"

Little did you know there'd be this:

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

(I put an author with 2 books on here, but I'm expecting more).
