The Enchanted is an awesome book but it is not science fiction.

Love me some Hunger Games, but by what measure is this gem hidden?

There should be a ratings maximum for books on this list - say 5,000. But also there should be a year minimum - say at least 10 years. And to avoid author spam say a ratings minimum of at least 100 ratings unless the book is at least 30 years old. But at that point you might as well just vote on a different list like say

All science fiction with 1,000 to 9,999 ratings
All science fiction with 100 to 999 ratings
Best Science Fiction on Goodreads with less than 100 ratings

does anyone know what a hidden gem is???? some people certainly. but dune, the martian, ready player one, are clearly not

Hidden gem means its extremely outstanding and not many people know about it.

For me as it relates to goodreads, if a book is older than goodreads say from earlier than 2006. And it has between 100 and 1000 ratings. And it has an average rating of > 3.8. Then it is likely a hidden gem.

Or if it is later than 2006. And it has between 500 and 5000 ratings. And it has an average rating of > 3.8. Then it is likely a hidden gem.

Other than the average rating point of view, the following lists capture this somewhat.
All science fiction with 1,000 to 9,999 ratings
All science fiction with 100 to 999 ratings
Best Science Fiction on Goodreads with less than 100 ratings

and it is possible that the hidden gem could include books from 1000 to 9999 ratings - perhaps with an average rating > 4.0

a book from 2006 isnt old, nor particularly hidden unless very few people have heard about it. books that show up on awards lists would not be "hidden".

So why is A Scanner Darkly on this list? What's "hidden" about it?

How about Parable of the Sower? We? Red Rising? Ancillary Justice?

... I give up. We Goodreaders have managed to create another list with an intriguing title--and the same old universal favorites. :(

I would like to add my voice to the chorus pointing out that stuff like Artemis Fowl, books by Stephen King etc. don't really count as "hidden". If you can find it in virtually any bookshop that has a half-decent sci-fi/fantasy section, it's not "hidden".

The key about 2006 is goodreads. A more recent book is more likely added. So criteria on a recent book should be higher.

Doesn't Goodreads push lists to readers when a book they have already read is on it? If so, and all of the books on this list had 100-1000 ratings, they'd all likely remain hidden. Perhaps this list was made to promote lesser known authors by including them side by side with others who are hugely popular.

I am pretty sure that Goodreads is not using the contents of the lists as a mechanism for book recommendations.
