Celeste Martínez There is also a interesting literature write in Spanish language waiting to be explored. Emilia Pardo Bazán, for example.

You should add it to the list ^_^ I can't read Spanish but I'm sure there will be other people in the group who can and will appreciate the recommendation. :D

TheOriginalNikeGirl I added such books as What Our Mothers Didn't Tell Us: Why Happiness Eludes the Modern Woman and The Flipside of Feminism: What Conservative Women Know—and Men Can't Say that purportedly contain a more conservative point of view to round out this list so people might be able to explore the topic of feminism from the viewpoint of different ideologies.

OK. Thanks for the advice!

But this is a bit contradictory, right?

Refusing to learn about/examine different points of view isn't contradictory, it's being willfully ignorant. Most of the books on this list came from very liberal ideologies, and I would hope there are people out there not so close-minded as to reject any point of view that isn't in line with their own.

If you're implying that conservatives can't be feminists, perhaps you should read some books about feminism from a conservative point of view before making blanket statements.

All the people is free to add books to this list, and you can do it everything that you wants, but I still think that the conservative thought is opposite to the vision of a free woman. It's only my point of view.

It is good to read about other sides but please don't add books that disagree with what this group is about and that is equality. It is not ignorant to disregard titles that would say women cannot achieve or have what men have as that is not the promotion of equality and it is absolutely possible to support and argue for women's equality without entertaining ideas that women (and any gender/sex in fact) have set roles in society that they can only be happy in. People may approach feminism from different perspectives and see different stem causes for the issues in our society but equality of sexes/genders is not an issue which is up for debate (and that is the simple definition of feminism by which this group abides).

I'm agree with you. The genders roles (the woman like wife, mother...) can't link with the vision of a woman liberated, precisely, of these gender roles. This is all that I wanted to say...

Do you will add "The rules" like a feminist book? No, I think. This book promotes the vision of a submissive woman. I enjoy reading E. L. James, but, for many reasons, I never would add her books to the list...

I think I know what you're getting at and I'm glad you agree :) although I do think you can choose to define yourself as a wife and a mother (amongst other things) and be a feminist. It's about having the choice to be whatever you want, to not be a mother if you wish, and also to be able to be a mother and a CEO just like it seems acceptable for a man to be a father and CEO. Also if you choose to be a mother and not have a job if your circumstances make this a viable option. But yes women shouldn't be told their only proper place is as a wife and a mother.

Also I appreciate you not adding 50 Shades of Grey aha :') although it's perfectly ok to enjoy it. You get the list :D.

Ashley Doutt The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World by Adrienne Mayor should be considered.

The Amazons Lives and Legends of Warrior Women Across the Ancient World by Adrienne Mayor

It was one the best non fiction books I read last year. Mayor details the recent archaeological evidence of real women warriors that were the inspiration of their mythical Greek counterparts.

Diana A lot of spam for a Persian-written book that hasn't been translated to English. I removed it not only because the spam votes, but also because due to cultural differences what might be deemed as feminist in Iran could be the exact opposite for Western culture. I've already contacted the author and asked him for a synopsis in English. I'll add the book to the list again if the book is appropriate for this list.

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren R Really wish there was a way of reporting damagingly transphobic or antifeminist books that really shouldn't be on a list about feminism.
