Frankenstein: The 1818 Text

"I encourage this specific edition or the Norton because they reproduce the first editions of Mary Shelley's original work without her husband intervening!"

The Castle of Otranto
by
"Ever wonder where Gothic got its name from? or where the modern goths and just about every horror film started? A great way to start is with this short novella, which is considered the first Gothic work!

"It, like Vathek, is based on Oriental tales. However, it'll make you laugh your butts off! Yes! A book which makes you laugh like nuts! Horace Walpole, you humor us so!"

Pride and Prejudice
by
"As much as this book is boring, it is a seminal text due to its description of 18th century morals and blah blah blah. But if you don't read it, I think a lot of the other literature of the period seems lame. :D so bear with one to enjoy the rest! Haza!"

Wuthering Heights
by
"If this book is not on this list already it should be! It's a fantastic novel with Romantic notions merged with the often conflicted and weakened Victorian construction of the refined world. Basically east meets west and a lot of interracial relationship going on in this novel! What's not to love?!"

The Faerie Queene
by
"Though it's less studied than Paradise Lost and not given as much credit as Hamlet is a tragedy, the Faerie Queene is perhaps the best of them! It also uses Clockwork-Orangian language. If you are looking for a quick read then obviously you will need to pick up this poetic gem another time!"

The Monk
by
"I would make this a priority for anyone wishing to know anything about the 1790s. This book though it has censored for centuries has now been given its proper form and returns to the shelves! Wanna know more? It was a best-seller in 1796! So what are you waiting for? This is the novel you've been looking for!"

"At some cross-point in one's life I'm sure you envisioned marrying your mother and killing your father. If that's you then this explains a lot. If not...well...ask Freud what he thinks about that."
