Erin, I so agree with you on this as a lousy ending. I loved the rest of the book, and then it just went CLUNK. WTF??!

No kidding! And while I understand the whole breastfeeding issue, it was NOT what my 15 year old mind wanted to deal with at the time!

I have this weird mental block about the breastfeeding thing in the book. When I read it as a teen, that part just went right by me as if it wasn't there. Then I re-read the book about 4 or 5 years ago, and I had a very un-adult "ooh, yick!" reaction. Then I totally forgot about it again until you mentioned it. I'm so good at selective forgetting. ;-)
