Doctor De Soto
by
"A family favorite. The vocabulary takes this to a challenging level even for grade 3 ("carnivore"), but if you have quick readers, they will love it. Otherwise, read-to K-3, and be ready to discuss a few words. Older kids get cranky when the picture books come out sometimes!"

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub
by
"The illustrations are so detailed, children will crowd around to see them! "Ew, worms!" Don't you hate it when "King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out"? Great to read-to as soon as the child stops tearing paper. About one sentence per page, but higher vocab."

The Tale of Peter Rabbit (World of Beatrix Potter, #1)
by
"I recommend this whole series. Without preaching, it reminds children that sometimes grown-ups DO know what is best for them, and the illustrations are precious! If your child is not white and you are having trouble finding an adequate supply of books, although they DO need to see children who look like themselves, little animals look like whoever is hearing the story."

Please be aware that I didn't try to order my own additions. A member was looking for a list of primary books, and I pulled these from my own list. The stars do not reflect how well they might suit a child (plenty of kids just love Go Dog Go and the Berenstain Bear series), but at the time I entered them, I rated them according to my own preference. I checked, and other children's book lists have at least a few that are better suited to grades 4 and up.
