Artemas I really enjoyed that trilogy and its much more military than fantasy. Check out my review of the first book for more info.

You really need to give The Black Company another chance. Try to finish the first book before giving up. Remember: this tale is told as annals of the company and as such is does not contain too much descriptions and feels somewhat disconnected, but the style grows on you.
