David I used to see Dickens' novels as divided into his good work and his bad work. Now I see the divide as between his cartoon novels and his more baroque work.
I'd say Martin Chuzzlewit probably falls nearest the fence between the two.
The bottom four on this list are cartoon novels, the top four are baroque. The Pickwick Papers is a long, unabashedly cartoonish novel. Its lack of pretension makes it charming and successful.
David Copperfield and Our Mutual Friend are among the best books I've ever read, and I would never actually choose between them - except here, for this list. Obviously.
