The Han Solo Adventures
by
"Han Solo stories written before any canon was established. Nothing bogs down Han and Chewie's adventures before the original trilogy, they're full of action and character moments."

Star Wars: Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor
by
"Matt Stover gets Star Wars. This is the only novel he's written about the original trilogy cast, and it takes place soon after Return of the Jedi concludes. Some of the best character moments, suspenseful writing that adds metafictional weight to the story, awesome action, and a great exploration of the Force."

The Final Reflection (Star Trek: Worlds Apart, #1)
by
"A really wonderful coming-of-age story starring a Klingon. The frame story takes place on the Enterprise, but the rest of the book is great world-building, establishing the Klingon competition culture that mirrors our own in enough ways to compel you to read. Great prose, and a great novel in its own right."

Doctor Who: The Infinity Doctors (Past Doctor Adventures, #17)
by
"While the book has a weird alternate-dimensional feel to it, you are unmistakably reading about the Doctor. This book delves into Gallifreyan culture more than I've ever seen on the show, and the science behind the villain plot is engaging. Dramatic character moments keep you reading."

Star Wars: Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina
by
"Fleshing out the Star Wars universe, the Kevin Anderson "Tales of" stories were written pre-prequel continuity. That means you get a great story about Greedo's rise and fall, along with stories about every one of those weird aliens in the first movie's cantina."

Star Wars: A New Hope (Star Wars Novelizations, #4)
by
"The novelization is different enough from the film to warrant an initial read. You can see how George Lucas's vision was scaled back due to production costs by reading this. Before audiences saw Star Wars in 1977, this book was published, making it our culture's first exposure to Star Wars."
