Ed Piskor: The Fantagraphics Studio Edition
by
"One of the most gorgeously designed AE's, thanks primarily to Jacob Covey; in terms of production quality, it's absolutely in the same league as the other four Fantagraphics Studio Editions. When comparing the subject matter of all five FSE's however, it's immediately obvious that Ed Piskor doesn't belong in the same elite category as Hal Foster, Jaime Hernandez, Charles Burns & Dan Clowes. 'The Hip Hop Family Tree' is following Black Hole, Eightball, Prince Valiant & Love & Rockets? Really? Beyond the huge sales that the series has generated thanks to the broad appeal of its topic, the art & writing is vastly inferior to the other books in the FSE line... though it's still superior to many of the AE's produced by IDW, Dark Horse, Graphitti Designs, etc. An FSE by any one of the many outstanding cartoonists published by Fantagraphics would have been more appropriate: for example, Jim Woodring, Robert Crumb, Joe Sacco, David B., Thomas Ott, Lorenzo Mattotti or Tony Millionaire, Ed Piskor worships Todd McFarlane & Rob Liefeld, and he believes that sales numbers & celebrity validate whatever shitty, manipulative hack bullshit were used to attain their commercial success... dismissing any notion that the terrible comics of the 90's by Image & Marvel merit the criticism they've received, as if juvenile adulation is more important than the artistic success of books like Ice Haven or Black Hole. But Ed Piskor has no issue with hypocritically lauding the brilliance of mini-comics read by virtually no one (*not my criticism, just the absurd logical conclusion of anyone following the Todd McFarlane outlook), the values of which are contradicted by every fucking second of the retarded Todd McFarlane 'interview' on Piskor's Cartoonist Kayfabe YT channel with 'Uncle Todd' McFarlane. It's a phillibuster by the biggest douchebag in comics, and Piskor's contempt for anyone lacking a blue checkmark has eventually become quite evident. He disdains any fans who are less than slobbering, sycophantic minions, as well as comic creators who make comics because they love the medium, and feel compelled to create without much thought for profit. Those who come to comics prioritizing profit - like 'Uncle Todd' & Rob Liefeld - are dull, hack morons. Even in the realm of business, their success is mediocre & ridiculous when viewed beyond the microscopic chunk of the overall economy represented by the comics industry... he's a great toymaker, is Todd Mac, but his legacy as a comics creator is shit. Getting back to Ed, the vitriolic statements above regarding his confused personal opinions should not be taken as a condemnation of his work as a cartoonist; while he lacks the greatness that defines his fellow FSE creators, he's still very talented, and this is one of the more instructive AE's available for any fans looking for insights into the creative process. Lots of corrections, and almost every page includes a footnote... and 'Kayfabers' out there know just how verbose Ed is, a charismatic self-promoter who takes Uncle Todd's advice on out-working or murdering the competition. He actually does admire the artists who create for the sake of art, but when he's been gently or forcefully criticized by artists less popular to himself in the past, that's when the ultra-defensive, ultra-populist, 'shut-the-fuck-up' attitude emerged, i.e. "All a you pretentious, snob bitches put together haven't sold 1% of the comics I have, so you've got nothing to say to me worth hearing" (I'm paraphrasing). He's locked into this attitude now, even if this makes his love for 'Outlaw Comics' - a Kayfabe-created indie comic sub-genre of incredibly obscure, late-70's-mid-90's titles - hypocrisy. A complete self-contradiction, one based on petty, narcissistic pride avant-garde, snobby masters a reactionary perspective like Chester Brown (whose books MUST be absolute garbage compared to 'Spawn' or 'Youngblood', since 'The Playboy', 'I Never Liked You', and the 'Frank' comics were often struggling to sell enough copies to cover the production costs"
