Martin Rising: Requiem For ...

by
4.33 avg rating — 518 ratings
"Martin Rising is a wonderful book about Martin Luther King. Andrea Davis Pinkney used "docu-poems" to discuss the final weeks in King's life. The book flows from bright times to dark & back to brightness. It leaves readers visualizing hope & a positive future. Brian Pinkney's illustrations accentuate the power of home, family, church, animals and weather. His use of bright & dark swirls of color accentuated a spiritual aspect rather than the sad details of King's death.
There's an extensive section in the back of the book with notes from the author and illustrator, a history of King's life, a timeline, and resources used to create this book. Well done!!!"

The Prince and the Dressmaker

by
4.33 avg rating — 122,098 ratings
" The prince likes to secretly cross-dress. He discovers a young dressmaker with a creative flair to design his magnificent collections. She manages to keep his secret about being genderqueer (as author Jen Wang gives reference) until she begins to rise in fame as an outstanding designer. It is a good story for older readers and a good one for parents to consider as they wish to better understand and accept their own children's stages and choices in growing up."

Hurricane Child

by
3.78 avg rating — 4,481 ratings
"Hurricane Child will take readers to Water Island in the Virgin Islands. While there, readers will have a chance to experience the turbulent weather that often disturbs the Caribbean Islands. But more than that, readers will see a turbulence within personal lives, the extended family unit, and social cliques at school. Readers will agonize with a little girl and her dad, as the mother suddenly disappears. The little girl is the darkest skinned in her class and others make fun of her and try to hurt her. Enters the story, a new girl from another island. The two become friends and feel a tinge of romantic love for each other. As the hurricane in life seems to dissipate, the author ties all the story's fragments together, and readers should be pleased with how this turbulent story concludes!

The audiobook is amazing! Narrator, Krystel Roche, offers a Caribbean-inflected voice as she presents this spectacular story!"

Bob

" Fast-pace fantasy story that will captivate early readers. Highly recommend reading this aloud with K -3rd grade. It has a lovely interaction between a little girl and her magical friend, Bob. The chapters go back and forth, between the two characters, telling the chain of events through their own POV. Would also be a fantastic read-aloud for an intermediate classroom. What it means to be a friend is a key theme in this story. Also, family bonds and self confidence are highlighted throughout the story. Author, Wendy Mass, offers a great book club guide for this book at her webpage."
