I've just ordered a copy of Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall having agreed with Susan we'll do it together as a "Hot Read" if it doesn't get nominated this time round.
#pollwatch @ 13 May 2014
The Vertigo Years: Europe 1900-1914 is now out in front.
I'm going to pick up this book today.

The Vertigo Years: Europe 1900-1914 by Philipp Blom 4 votes, 44.4%
The Girls of Murder City: Fame, Lust, and the Beautiful Killers who Inspired Chicago by Douglas Perry 3 votes, 33.3%
Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall by Spike Milligan 2 votes, 22.2%
Terrible Honesty: Mongrel Manhattan in the 1920s by Ann Douglas 0 votes, 0.0%
The Vertigo Years looks great. I have already started Spike Milligan's book, regardless of whether it wins or not. Not sure why I have never read his famous war memoirs before, but it is brilliant and I'm glad I have finally got around to them.

However, if it does not prevail, I will set the "hot reads" thread up so anyone who wants to can discuss it.
I have a copy on order from the library which I hope will arrive soon.
I read it years ago and all I can remember is that it was very amusing - and interesting.

I have a copy too, and agree that it looks like a fascinating book.
Whatever wins, let's hope we get plenty of take up. The May 2014 non-fiction read has not caught light yet. I was waiting to see what others thought of it before making a decision.
I have been quoting the Milligan book, which is always a good sign - and there are several more books to go :)
I can't believe it...#pollwatch @ 15 May 2014
Spike takes an early lead so I get that from the library...
...Spike's then overtaken by "The Vertigo Years" so I get that from the library, and now...
The Girls of Murder City: Fame, Lust, and the Beautiful Killers who Inspired Chicago by Douglas Perry 5 votes, 41.7%
The Vertigo Years: Europe 1900-1914 by Philipp Blom 4 votes, 33.3%
Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall by Spike Milligan 3 votes, 25.0%
...yep, "The Girls of Murder City" is out in front and probably going to win.
Gotta say, out of all them, a tale about women who killed their husbands/lovers and the reporter who covered the trials and turned them into the hit play "Chicago" is least attractive to me.
Ah well, so long as we get a good discussion out of it. Votes don't always translate into a lively debate though. The book that won the May 2014 non-fiction read has stimulated very little discussion so far.
I will only change votes/ vote now if I am sure I will read the book. I do try to join in with at least one group read each month.
^ Me too Susan. I think it's a good policy. Now then, having waved the white flag regarding Spike, here's a Hot Read thread for anyone that wants to discuss it....

See you there BYTers.
I wasn't sure which one to vote for, so had a "look inside" the various titles at Amazon before deciding to go for 'The Girls of Murder City'. It looks to be written in a very readable style, and I think it will prove to be an interesting account of sensational journalism in Chicago at that time. As I'm also a fan of 'Chicago' the musical, and the earlier Ginger Rogers film 'Roxie Hart', those are extra attractions!I also try only to vote for books I'll actually read... it's a pity nobody seems to be discussing the May non-fiction book. That one didn't appeal to me so I gave it a miss, but I'm surprised at the lack of discussion.
^ Well done Judy. Good to know you'll be contributing to the June discussion. I look forward to reading your thoughts. I may read it if you're suitably effusive.
