The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin is a long standing, iconic piece of sci-fi literature by one the best practitioners of the art.. No less deserving is Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood which is on my TBR. I chose Kindred by Octavia E. Butler for its interesting concept of time travel and its historically accurate reflection of the antebellum South. Masterfully written by a very talented African-American female author. I just finished reading and reviewing is for another Goodreads group. I cast my vote there for its many unique qualities and its excellence in writing. Truly an exceptional piece of writing!

Mark I wish I could vote twice. I own a copy of Behold the Man, but would be delighted to read Oryx and Crake or Kindred. Not sure I have the time for a reread, but The Left Hand of Darkness is transcendent. Reading it made me feel like a changed person. We have some absolutely magnificent choices this month and it's hard to see where we can go wrong. This is a true literary feast we have assembled, and I'd love to see the selections not chosen roll over.

This month looks like my to-read list: fantastic literary sci-fi! I'm so excited to be in this group!

And it's great to have you on board! I was thinking that the runner-up choice could be a second group read so that anybody who isn't keen on the winning choice would have an alternative.

Donna Rae Jones Good idea to have a runner-up choice as there are a number of books on that list I'd like to read. Makes choosing just one really difficult. So many good books, so little time for reading ...

OK. We'll do that then. Last year, I used an online calculator to determine how long it would take me to read the books on my TBR shelf - over a hundred years! :O And that shelf has grown since - it's clearly an aspirational list!
