I don't think I've ever read anything that portrays the myth of the American cowboy that was written as early as The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains. I haven't read Cooper's Leatherstocking tales so I don't know if they deal with the cowboy of the West. I know there were penny & dime novels, but they were more like comic or graphic novels. I wonder if Wister started the western novel craze of the 20th century.

I don't the answer to that question, but I plan on reading The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains some time later this year, unless it wins the poll-in which case I will read it a lot sooner.
