Cheryl Carroll I've added a note to my calendar to check on results 10/09. I nominated BLUES FOR MR. CHARLIE, but we have some really great options here!

Of the 3 works in the lead- I'm tempted to change vote to Elmer Kelton, but that one is a trilogy and would make a good "Buddy Read" for the series. Bruce Catton's novel is also a trilogy. I *love* Civil War history so much! This is so hard. If we end up doing Chesnutt's novel, I have the feeling that I'll want to reread LIGHT IN AUGUST as a companion piece.

Catton's book is not a novel. It won the National Book Award for Excellence in Nonfiction. I read it as a standalone a long time ago and found it very compelling.
Have you read Shiloh, by Shelby Foote? If you are like me and enjoy reading about the Civil War, you should pick that one up without delay.

Cheryl Carroll I do have SHILOH! In addition to that, my brother and sister-in-law gifted me his 3 volume CW set last Christmas. I started with Volume 2, but didnt finish bc this was around the same time I set out to find book club buddies. James McPherson is another of my favorites. Have you read any of his work?

Cheryl,

The Kelton book is part of a trilogy, but the other two are prequels rather than sequels. "The Good Old Boys" can definitely be read as a standalone book.

I have read James McPherson, Cheryl. His "Battle Cry of Freedom" is considered to be the best one-volume history of the Civil War to ever have been written.

I love McPherson's writing! I also love that he and his wife are a team, and that she helps him a lot with his research. I own, but have not read BATTLE CRY. I've got several others ready to be read as well. WHAT THEY FOUGHT FOR was a thought-provoking read. I like to listen to McPherson and Allen Guezlo lectures during my commutes.
