Erin -crosses fingers for Windup Girl- I've been wanting to read that one for a long time and I need an excuse to.

message 3: by Peter (new)

Peter Greg Bear -- That is, if we don't want to get adventurous and read "Vurt" by Jeff Noon.

message 4: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia Wacholder I'm curious about Spin, but couldn't find it in e-book form, so Eon it is

Richard If I may quote Candiss from the nomination thread :

China Mountain Zhang, by Maureen F. McHugh. Despite winning a shelf full of awards (James Tiptree, Jr. Memorial Award, the Lambda Literary Award, the Locus Award for Best First Novel, and a Hugo), it's woefully underappreciated. I've read many wonderful things about it, and the few chapters I sampled were very good. It's not conventional, and the author excels at both scientific and social speculation.

All that and it's on my shelf unread. It gets my vote.

Brad I am really surprised it hasn't received more votes. I think that quote from Candiss is a killer sell.

Julia Here's what Sandi wrote in her review here of Hammered by Elizabeth Bear:

I find it really hard to believe that Hammered was Elizabeth Bear's first novel. The plot was so tight; the characters were so interesting; and the story was both intriguing and exciting. It was one of those books that took great willpower to put down when I to go do other things. I have read and listened to a few short stories by Bear that I thought were fantastic. It's nice to see that she handles the novel format just as well.

Besides, I've read Bear's New Amsterdam and loved it and I've had this one on my TBR shelves for many months after having it recommended at a party.

Ryan I've been wanting to read The Windup Girl for a bit now ... especially since I learned Bacigalupa has been nominated for the Hugo and Nebula for his short stories, some set in the same world. "The Tamarisk Hunter" is a good example at windupstories.com.

Bryan Spin was available as a free download from Tor.com about a year and a half ago. The link was only planned to be open for a couple months, so I think they were doing some market research... if x people download in this 2 month period, do we sell y more books than in the previous 2 month period...

Anyways, there were about 10 or 12 books available free at that time, and Spin was one of them.

Bookbrow Wow, The Windup Girl really seems to be popular. I'll have to check it out.

Brad We have our winner and it is The Windup Girl. Thanks for voting everyone. Great turnout this month. If anyone is interested in being our discussion leader just let us know.

message 12: by Ryan (new)

Ryan I'll volunteer, if you'll have me. I've already got a list of discussion questions brewing ...
