I haven't read a one of these, though some of them are considered classics. Clearly I need to get a-readin'.

I read Cat's Cradle just a few weeks ago. Loved it.Being new to goodreads and this group, I chose a book I hadn't read, "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" as it's currently sitting on my to-read shelf. I've never read anything by Heinlein.
Looking forward to actually participating in one of the monthly reads!
Although a little dated, the Moon Is a Harsh Mistress has my vote for the greatest SF book of all time.
I thought about voting for Oryx and Crake because I heard how good it is, but Atwood's refusal to call it sci fi kind of turned me off from it. I'm not sure what her problem is with classifying it as such, but it bothers me.
I can't say enough good words about Moon is a Harsh Mistress, it's just brilliant and reading it was a real treat.I however voted for Cat's Cradle, as I've been wanting to finally read it for quite a while.
SamanthaI believe that Atwood would claim that its literature. Science Fiction is to certain literary types typically looked down upon, as merely genre fiction.
Oh how little they know

Yeah. That strikes me as a very close-minded attitude. Though I guess the author has the right to call her work whatever she likes. :)
I wonder if all the news about Atwood suggesting the Moon landing was a hoax is affecting the vote....Just finished Oryx & Crake but the others I havent read.
I might be very happy with quite few of these, but it's been a while since I've read Count Zero. I remember liking that a lot more than Neuromancer.
Have an issue I want to raise and hopefully get read, can we please not leave the poll til so late in the month? By the time the poll concludes and I order the book I won't get it til around this time next month. I can't be the only person who has to get their books ordered in. I posted about it here as well: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...
oryx & crake is fantastic and I'm long overdue for a re-read AND it would be a great discussion book. but the mount has been on my tbr pile for a good while now, and it looks way intriguing...
Dune's already been done, actually, and November is our L.E. Modesitt Jr. month. It's important to remember, though, that even though a book may be finished for its monthly read, there is no reason why the discussion should end. The Dune discussion is still in the queue, and anyone who wants to add a comment in the discussion can do so; new comments will bring back past commentators and if a few of you are tackling a book at the same time a revival of the discussion would be fabulous. Plus, if you let one of the moderators know what you're up to we can move the thread back into a prominent position to attract other readers. As for your concerns, Kim, thanks for sharing them with us again. Sometimes, yes, we are quite late (mostly due to busy lives, I imagine, at least that's my excuse), but there are plenty of times when we're not. Both the September Sci-Fi poll and the October Fantasy poll were completed in advance, and the Modesitt polls are already planned and will be opening in the first week of October, which will give us the bulk of the month to track down the books. And don't forget that there is no deadline on when you can jump into the discussion. While I understand that most people probably like to be part of the discussion right from the off, one can still come to a discussion later on and make a significant contribution. In fact, late comers are one of the best things to keep a discussion flowing all month. So if you're not able to get and read the book until later in the month, don't be shy...come and join a discussion anyway.
Tee wrote: "Can't say that any of those titles interest me. Anyone up for Dune by Herbert?"Seriously?! Wow. I thought that was a list that would have a little something for everyone.
I've read a few of these books and loved them...unfortunately I don't know that I remember them enough to participate in the discussion effectively (and I have too many books on my TBR mountain to go back and reread them)I voted, but it was a toss up - I would be pleased to read any of the others listed :)
Ive been wanting to read Eifelheim for forever so thats my choice. If Id either never have read Cat's Cradle or had read it super-recently, Id go for that, but it isnt time to "renew" that one yet hehe.
I want a book I can read on my Kindle! :P The Heinlein book is not available for the Kindle.I voted for "Woman on the Edge of Time" because the synopsis looks interesting to me. I am currently trying to read Game of Thrones, though, before the tv show starts!
Heinlein nope for me (read 'em all when the teabaggers and I were young). Read Oryx and Crake too recently, so voting for Cat's Cradle. Will Vonnegut be as subversive as I remember?
Like Vicky, I'm a bit limited to what's at Border's or Barnes and is paperback budget friendly. While reading new titles is very relaxing, revisiting titles like Dune is like dropping in to visit an old friend. I'll gladly go hunting for the Dune thread. FYI there's a possibility of yet another remake in the works movie-wise too. Some time in 2011 or 12!
Now that Moon is a Harsh Mistress is our official book for October, is there anyone who'd like to volunteer to lead the discussion?
Heinlein's Mycroft Holmes is one of the best characters in fiction. I'm not particularly a Heinlein fan, but you all are in for a treat with this book. His best novel.
Rhialto wrote: "To Tee:I am still hearing vague rumors of a third collection of Dangerous Visions, too."
There's a second Dangerous Visions but it may not include works by the same authors.
For all you Kindle people, I found a pdf version of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress online(not torrent!)and converted it using Calibre, which I find works quite well for the Kindle - there is a header that appears at printed page intervals through the text, but it should not be too distracting.http://free-ebook-download.org/The-Mo...
