I think I went with nostalgia. I found Conan when I was younger. Kane was a later find and there was less "hype". (Yes I admit it in the 70s I read the Lancer Conan covers...and like a lot of them, gasp. It's okay, I'm in recovery.
Although I also found Conan first, I was drawn to Kane when I read the Marvel adaptations as a teenager because, I think, a) he's English (like me); b) he's not a superhuman powerhouse (also like me!); and c) his particular brand of "dark and moody" just kind of sat right for me at the time, so there's a nostalgia element for me, too.
I voted for Conan, too; but I was somewhat handicapped in that the only two Howard characters I've actually read stories about (that were on the poll) are Conan and Kull, and I've only read one Kull story. So I was pretty much voting for the only nominee that I "know" as a character! Sorry to be so ignorant, compared with the rest of you (I WANT to remedy that, honest --it's getting time to do so that's not so easy! :-( ).

There are a couple of omnibus editions for Bran Mak Morn and Solomon Kane. Of course there are other characters of Howard beside these. I've never read his westerns for instance. Howard was a prolific writer. http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I voted for El Borak the original adventure hero. The prototype for Indiana Jones that Lucas saw in a reprint cover.
Werner wrote: "I voted for Conan, too; but I was somewhat handicapped in that the only two Howard characters I've actually read stories about (that were on the poll) are Conan and Kull, and I've only read one Kul..."I've added a "Write in" option to the poll, so if there's another character that you'd like to add and vote for, you can.
I went for Conan, but Kull, Solomon Kane, Black Turlogh and Sailor Steve Costigan are close behind for me. Could have just been different for different's sake, but I always come back to Conan in the end :)
Vincent wrote: "How did Kull end up with a -1 vote? How is that even possible?"I don't know! There are 29 voters, none of whom show as having voted for Kull, but with his -1 the poll tallies 28 voters. I deleted the Kull option and while it disappeared, the tally still showed 28 rather than 29 voters. I've added Kull back in as a voting option and it's showing as 0, even if the poll count is wrong. I think he may have a hanging chad.
