I feel like getting away from "classic" fantasy and Shriek: An Afterword sounds like it fits that bill.

Did the group already read A Game of Thrones? I couldn't find it on the shelves, but otherwise, why read the second book (A Clash of Kings)?
Sure have, Andre. We've actually read Game of Thrones twice, and just finished our rereading on June 30th. Check the discussion threads and it should be fairly near the top.
June 30th? The fantasy read for June was the Summer Tree, wasn't it? How could I have missed that you guys were reading Game of Thrones too? I did a more careful search of the shelves, and I do see it now for June three years ago...has the discussion lasted that long? I don't understand. That said, I did see the discussion folder but didn't notice it was active. Sometimes the recent discussions seem to fall far to the bottom really fast, like Foundation, which isn't even on the front page anymore despite being only two months old (from the end of April).
We ran a reread of Game of Thrones that went from May to June with a five chapter a week committment. It was in addition to our regular regimen of one Fantasy and one Sci-Fi book. It came about due to the HBO series. The dropping down of discussions is an unfortunate part of the goodreads group model, but they can always be accessed by clicking to expand to the full view of all topics. And we engourage anyone who happens to find themselves reading a book to jump in to the old discussions and add comments. You'd be surprised how many old commentors jump back in when there's new activity.
I'm actually hoping Clash of Kings doesn't win. I didn't join in on the Game of Thrones reread and I'd have to read that again to get up to speed for CoK. Also the only people who will join in are those who have read, and liked, GoT. I would rather go with something that's the first or a standalone.
I have to agree with Kim. I was here and would have joined in the GoT reread if I'd known what the plan was, but I didn't, so now I'd have to catch up and I've got too much else going on right now.
There's so much cool stuff on here that a bunch would make me happy, but I am still pulling for Clash of Kings. Never having read the series, and having just read Game of Thrones for the first time here, a win would give me the impetus to continue.
I'm switching my vote to The Light Fantastic (away from Shriek), as it seems to have the best chance of unseating ACOK. (Not starting that series until it's done.)

I've read The Light Fantastic too many times :P Snuff is only a couple months away too :DI'm sticking with Shriek
'banewreaker' can apparently be read as a "history is written by the victors" retelling of LOTR, wherein the good guys aren't all shining knights, and the bad guys aren't eeeeeevil. that sounds rather cool. but I've been crazy excited about 'the drowning city' for a while now...AND more Jo Walton goodness...decisions...
HUGE agreement with Kim et al, the GRRM is only fun if you've been in it from the get-go, so not my cuppa.
