Futuristic technology with a sort of non conformist theme is what I have seen in the two books I have read that were supposed to be of the genre.
See Running Black and The Other Side of Life

The father of Cyberpunk, (which is all one word as is Steampunk) is William Gibson with his first Sprawl book Neuromancer being the pentacle beginning of the Sci-Fi sub-genre. He coined the phrase cyberspace! (HUGE ass William Gibson Fan here!) Also known for some great Cyberpunk is Neil Stephenson with Snow Crash which really is an awesome read. HECK ANY of his books are!! Especially Cryptonomicon which I have read several times, to the point I am on my third copy!
Anyway if you want to read the beginnings of cyberpunk, read the Sprawl Trilogy and any of William Gibson's other books and definitely pick up Snow Crash too!
I don't think I've actually read any/much cyberpunk, and definitely not read any of William Gibson's work, so I think I shall vote for Cyberpunk! :)

Like Steam Punk, I've heard the term but didn't know what it was until I asked. I like Steam Punk so maybe I might like Cyper Punk.
