I was really shocked to read in the paper about your experience at Highland Park High School. I can't imagine these kids being allowed to get away with such behavior. This being a super rich area, I can imagine the sense of entitlement with some of these kids is enormous. You've given talks all over the country and I was curious if you feel this sense of entitlement is driving a lot of our politics these days?

Hi James. I think it was more behavioral than political, but one never knows. The inaction of the principal, during and after, was strange, though he was an incredibly kind and gracious man. I do not envy the pressure he must be under, especially from parents.
Since I spoke out, I've received 100+ emails from current and former students, current and former faculty. Many have shared their personal struggles and frustrations in what is an otherwise fabulous school.
I guess the bottom line is that all schools have problems, but not all schools have the will to address those problems. We'll see what happens.
As they say in Latin, spero meliora - I hope for better things.

Hi! I am so disappointed to miss my local bookseller's discussion of The Many Daughters of Afong Moy tonight, which I believe you are going to be a part of. I was wondering if you have notes posted for this book? I have been working to understand nervous system development (The Body Keeps the Score sits on my pile of books to read), and I very much enjoyed this take!

Hello, I really loved this book. I just finished it; it made me cry and I am not embarrassed to say that I actually hugged the book. As much as I selfishly want a sequel about how wonderful everything is now, you are right that it wouldn't add much to my imagination. :) I realize I'm not writing a question so much as gushing about how great this book is. Maybe we'll see Keiko's POV someday?
