Goodreads asked David Hicks:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

David Hicks I've published a slew of autobiographical stories in the last ten years, and when I was organizing them into a collection, I realized that if I put them in chronological order (according to the main character's age, I mean), the collection had the arc of a novel: the main character screws up his life in NYC, loses his children, gets lost in the mountains of Colorado, and reunites with his children in the end. There were gaps in the narrative, however, so I took a year to fill some of those gaps with new chapters from different characters' points of view. (I even asked my children to write short chapters from their points of view.) The result: a "novel-in-stories" that I'm very proud of.
