Goodreads asked Keith Ruffles:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Keith Ruffles The idea for Baltic Lenin stemmed out of a trip to Belarus with my father in 2008 - our first visit to the former Soviet Union. For practical reasons it was easier to enter via Lithuania, and the contrast between the two countries couldn't have been more stark: Lithuania was modern and confident whilst Belarus was what I imagined the USSR might have been like twenty years earlier. It then got me thinking; why had the two nations diverged so much despite once being part of the same state? What traces of the Soviet Union could still be detected on Baltic soil? And could this legacy still have implications for the region today?

This was the genesis for Baltic Lenin, and I hope that the story of my travels in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is as entertaining as it is informative.
