Goodreads asked Lynn Bryant:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Lynn Bryant I’ve been interested in the Peninsular War for years, but I can’t say I originally planned to be writing a series about it. I think I really got interested when I was re-reading Georgette Heyer during an illness and that led me on to some non-fiction. I enjoyed Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe books when I was a lot younger, and I started thinking about them and about the difficulties Sharpe had coming up from being an enlisted man and came up with a character who was very different - a wealthy officer who felt more comfortable round the camp fire with Wellington’s “scum of the earth”.
